Developments in the past couple of weeks point to the risk of trade policy in the US becoming much more protectionist. Given its huge bilateral trade surplus with the US, China is likely to be the main target of any trade war. But other countries in the region, notably the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan and Korea also look vulnerable to a shift towards protectionism by the US.
