Asia Weekly: Lessons from the Indonesia and Vietnam trade deals

With Indonesia joining Vietnam this week in securing a trade deal with the US, there are some important implications for the rest of the region. One is that the strength of a country’s negotiating hand with the US appears to have had little bearing on the terms that Trump says have been agreed - a flat tariff near 20% for both. Another is that officials in both Indonesia and Vietnam clearly feel that what Trump announced won't be the final landing point. It is clear, however, that Asia governments will be expected to clamp down on re-routing of exports from China.
