The European Commission gave its approval for Bulgaria join the euro-zone next year and, while the macroeconomic implications of euro adoption will be small, geopolitically it will bind the country closer to European institutions and a pro-western path. Elsewhere, Poland’s presidential election result could encourage a slightly slower pace of fiscal consolidation over the next couple of years.
