Concerns about AI’s impact on jobs are intensifying, with recent labour market data prompting debate over whether emerging signs of displacement reflect a genuine shift or simply cyclical noise. As the technology advances rapidly, a critical question is whether short-term movements will give way to more persistent, more fundamental changes to labour markets.
In this special briefing, at 10:00 ET/15:00 BST on Thursday 14 May, Chief Economic Adviser Vicky Redwood will lead a panel of economists to examine what the latest data show and whether fears of widespread displacement – the “jobpocalypse” of recent headlines – are justified. Drawing on our latest analysis of AI’s macroeconomic impact as well as the latest evidence from the US and UK, the team will address key issues, including:
- Whether AI is more likely to complement or substitute human labour, and whether this wave differs from past technological change
- Examine the conditions under which AI could drive large-scale displacement
- Consider how governments might respond, including through labour market policy and wealth redistribution
