Israel-Hamas ceasefire, Egypt heads to Washington

Israel and Hamas appear on the cusp of agreeing a long-awaited ceasefire agreement. If it holds, this puts the region on a path to end the war and removes key downside risks to the Middle East’s economic outlook. Regardless of what happens in the coming days, the war will leave a lasting legacy on the region’s geopolitics. Elsewhere, Egypt is due to hold talks with the IMF next week and, while policymakers have made good progress in several policy areas, the stalled privatisation drive could delay the disbursement of funds yet again. The crumb of comfort is that Egypt is not heavily reliant on IMF financing.
