This year’s spring wage negotiations (Shunto) delivered strong pay hikes for the third consecutive year, which will convince the Bank of Japan to tighten policy further this year. And while softer inflation despite the recent surge in energy prices could prompt trade unions to lower their sights next year, our base case is that stronger pay growth is here to stay.
