The seizure of the Marinera oil tanker by the US has put the “shadow fleet” under the spotlight, with some estimates suggesting it now accounts for ~20% of global tanker capacity. While a concerted effort to upend the fleet’s operations could cause severe disruption to global oil flows and push up prices, this would clearly be at odds with President Trump’s desire for lower oil prices.
