President Trump’s visit to the Gulf has led to a raft of deals, totalling nearly $1trn, with more likely in the offing. While Saudi Arabia’s ‘security for oil’ pact that underpinned strong relations with the US in the past is all but over, a new era of ‘security and AI for soft power’ now appears to be in play and may bring the Gulf states towards the US’s orbit. And the power vacuum left by a weakened Iran and Russia in the region has also opened space for Syria and Lebanon to move closer to the US too.
