Comments by Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel this week suggest the German central bank has abandoned its long-standing opposition to EU joint borrowing. But while we might see some more jointly-financed defence spending in the coming years, we doubt large-scale and permanent joint borrowing is on the cards. Meanwhile, this week’s EU leaders meeting confirmed that progress on reducing barriers to the EU’s competitiveness will be slow.
