While talk of US retaliation against China’s new export controls has mostly focused on tariffs and other barriers to goods trade, investment restrictions are another weapon in Washington’s arsenal. If tensions persist, the Trump administration could revive plans to tighten controls on cross-border investment flows and delist Chinese firms from US stock exchanges. These measures would weigh on Chinese equity markets and further restrict China’s access to US capital and technology.
