SARB hawkish, Zambia’s debt troubles

There are growing suggestions that the South African Reserve Bank will raise interest rates at its meeting next week, but the weakness of the latest activity data and of inflation expectations mean we think that it will keep rates on hold. Elsewhere, the recent spike in Zambia sovereign dollar bond spreads reinforce the concerns we flagged earlier this year about the country’s public debt.
