Insecurity in Nigeria: the north-south divide is widening

US military strikes in northern Nigeria a few weeks ago refocussed attention on the country’s security challenges. Violence remains high nationwide and, while security is improving modestly in the south, it is worsening in the north. The fiscal burden of insecurity is likely to grow and could present a continued point of friction in relations with the US. Structural reform remains key to reducing regional inequalities.
