Underlying inflation to remain low

While GDP growth was stronger than expected in Australia and New Zealand in the first quarter, this doesn’t alter our view that underlying inflation will remain low for a while yet. The Australian economy has operated below potential for a few years and we expect growth to again fall below potential later this year. Rising spare capacity should result in a further decline in inflation in Australia, and a similar story is also true in New Zealand.
