AI and jobs: could this time be completely different?
We still believe that AI will alter the nature of work, rather than significantly diminish the role of human labour. While it is not impossible that AI eventually displaces most or all jobs, such an outcome requires very strong assumptions. Even then, people would be financially better off so long as governments redistribute effectively the gains from the big boost to productivity. But a deeper challenge would involve adapting to a world in which work no longer played a central role in people’s lives.
We will be hosting an Online Drop-In on AI and the labour market at 10:00 ET/15:00 BST on Thursday 14 May. Join our Chief Economic Adviser Vicky Redwood and a panel of economists as they examine the macro and market implications.(Please register here.)
