Upcoming simplifications to India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) confirmed by the Finance Ministry this week will result in a slightly larger fiscal deficit this year and next, as well as provide a bit of support to the economy in the face of high US tariffs. Reducing compliance costs for firms – and therefore lifting productivity – could bring lasting benefits over the medium term too.
