The utility bills of Australian households won’t rise by as much as the eye-watering 20% figure that has been catching the headlines as not all retailers have raised prices by that much and as prices in some states won’t rise at all. Nonetheless, the scheduled hikes in electricity and gas prices on 1st July will squeeze real wages further and maintain the downward pressure on consumption growth.
