Delta variant puts a dent in retail sales

Ruth Gregory, senior UK economist at Capital Economics, said: “These data mean that after contributing to the 1 per cent month-on-month rise in GDP in June, sales will have taken 0.15 percentage points off GDP in July, increasing the chances that July was even weaker for the economy than we had thought. We can take some comfort from the fact that electronic card payments picked up again in early August."
