Revising our forecasts for DM 10-year bond yields

We continue to expect monetary tightening to push up 10-year government bond yields across developed markets (DMs) but we now forecast them to reach a higher level than we had previously anticipated, especially in the US, Germany and the UK.

Markets are creaking but not (yet) breaking

So far, the sell-off across bond and equity markets this year has not triggered major signs of systemic risk. If that were to change, central banks would probably have to step in to prevent a destabilising cycle of panic selling and money market distress from taking hold, even if such as step would to some extent clash with their plans to tighten monetary policy further. This publication takes stock of the various signs of stress across the global financial system. We intend to update the analysis periodically while the current market turmoil continues. In view of the wider interest, we are making this Stress Monitor available to clients of our Global Markets, FX Markets, and Asset Allocation Services.

Note: We’ll be discussing the markets outlook in light of Wednesday’s sell-off in a 20-minute online briefing on 19th May at 10:30 ET/ 15:30 BST. Register now.

We think the sell-off in E-Z government bonds has further to run

While the yield of 10-year Bunds has risen a long way recently, and is now above zero for the first time since before the onset of the pandemic, we think it will increase further still. We also expect long-dated government bond yields to rise further in the euro-zone periphery, and by more than in Germany.

We expect the S&P 500 to make only small gains

While we have raised our end-22 and end-23 forecasts for the S&P 500, we still expect gains in the index to be smaller over the next two years than they have been in 2021 and on average over the past decade.

We think BoE hikes will push up Gilt yields eventually

While the yields of both short- and long dated Gilts have moved little following yesterday’s surprise rate hike by the Bank of England we still expect them to rise as monetary policy is tightened further.
