Eurobond-bonanza? SA’s current account in full swing

African policymakers seem to be turning increasingly to international bond markets to finance budget deficits this year, which could add to existing debt vulnerabilities in Ghana and Nigeria. Meanwhile in South Africa, the swing in the current account balance to a large surplus last year seems to be down to a combination of robust external demand and domestic weakness, rather than a marked improvement in the country’s competitiveness.
