The fall in the ISM manufacturing index in July paints a slightly bleaker picture of the sector than is the reality. The rise in the production and new orders sub-indices, along with the fall in the prices paid index, suggests that the worst of the negative effects from tariffs are already behind us. That said, the further decline in the employment index could be a concern for the Fed following today’s weak Employment Report.
