The 139,000 gain in non-farm payrolls was not as good as it looks, given its narrow breadth and the 95,000 downgrade to payroll gains over the prior two months. Nevertheless, it shows that tariffs are having little negative impact. At the margin, the strength in average hourly earnings growth is another reason for the Fed to remain on pause while it assesses the effects of policy changes on the economy.
