Trade may trump rates as a driver of the US dollar

Judging by what has happened in recent months, President Trump’s attitude to global trade could remain a more important driver of the US dollar than the prospects for monetary policy in the US and elsewhere. With this in mind, we might need to revise our forecast that the greenback will weaken against most other major currencies next year, if Trump broadens his protectionist policies beyond China.
