Although Europe’s natural gas supply is now more diverse than before the energy crisis, the fact that most of its gas is imported means it is still exposed to geopolitical and infrastructure-related disruptions. In theory, the establishment of a strategic gas reserve could help to bolster Europe’s position. However, with any future disruption to gas supplies likely to be far smaller and less permanent than the enforced shift away from Russian pipeline gas, a fundamental overhaul of the EU’s natural gas market is unlikely.
