We now know that GDP probably declined in the fourth quarter, and the monthly data for November is grimmer than first appears, with broad based declines in goods producing industries offset by a temporary boost from service-sector strikes ending. Moreover, the flash estimate of only a weak monthly gain in December reduces the chance that quarterly growth will rebound sharply by 1.8% annualised in the first quarter as the Bank of Canada expects.
