Brazil: at a turning point or heading deeper into the mire?

A programme of government austerity will result in modest improvements to Brazil’s budget and current account deficits over the next year but at the expense of extremely weak growth and, in the near term at least, higher inflation. Those hoping for a marked upturn in Brazil’s performance during Dilma’s second term in office are likely to be left disappointed.
