Despite the crisis that has engulfed his administration, Brazil’s president, Michel Temer, is managing to cling on to office and there is now a reasonable chance that he serves out his full term to 2018. Mr. Temer has now been formally charged with corruption by federal prosecutors. Even so, the odds still appear to be in favour of him serving out his term. A two-thirds majority in the lower house is needed in order to put the president on trial in the Supreme Court, but this looks like a high bar; the latest noises suggest that Mr. Temer still has enough support in Congress to block proceedings.
