Why have corporate profits soared?

Corporate profits have more than doubled since Prime Minister Abe returned to power. We think that this reflects a reduction in cross-shareholdings since the late 1990s and improvements in corporate governance. The prolonged rise in profits suggests that Japanese stocks won’t collapse under their own weight but we still expect the Nikkei 225 to end the year lower than it is now.
