Regional bank tie-up a step in the right direction

Regional banks’ health has deteriorated as the population is shrinking and the number of firms is falling. As such, the cooperation between two of the largest regional banks that was announced this week paves the way for further consolidation in the sector. That would help to boost profitability and mollify the Bank of Japan’s concerns that low interest rates may eventually curtail lending.
