Consumption tax – not Olympics – key to Nikkei outlook

The headlines in Japan today have been dominated by the successful Olympics bid, but there will be many decisions with much greater economic and market significance to be taken before 2020 – not least whether to press ahead with the planned doubling of the consumption tax. In this respect the upward revisions to GDP growth announced today were favourable, while the softening in the more timely survey data supports the case for additional monetary stimulus to help offset the fiscal tightening.
