Heavy industry unlikely to lift China’s PMI for long

China’s unofficial and official manufacturing PMIs diverged again in March. The easing of pollution controls on heavy industry gave a boost to the official index, but slower growth elsewhere weighed on the unofficial index. This is consistent with the recent drop in industrial metals prices. We expect prices to continue to struggle as China’s economic growth slows in response to tighter credit conditions.
