Further signs of over-building

September’s annualised housing starts of 205,900, combined with upward revisions to July and August, indicates that third quarter housing investment grew more strongly than we had expected. However, while this stronger momentum will probably be carried over into the fourth quarter, housing starts are unlikely to be sustained above demographic requirements for very much longer, particularly considering the large excess inventory of unsold homes.
