Russia’s dwindling surpluses: causes and consequences

Russia is unlikely to run large current account surpluses for much longer. But while her days as a ‘super saver’ nation look numbered, we are equally sceptical of Russia’s ability to sustain large current account deficits. Accordingly, any fall in oil prices is likely to lead to a painful adjustment in domestic demand and a weaker ruble.
