Assessing the outlook for coal-gas switching in Europe

The substitution of coal for natural gas in European power generation has reversed in recent months, but we doubt that this marks the start of a new trend. Instead, we think that gas-based power in Europe will become increasingly price competitive in the years ahead, which will be bad news for the price of coal.
