How worried should we be about capital outflows?

All of the increase in capital outflows from China last year was the result of a reduction in China’s foreign liabilities, largely driven by firms paying down external debt. By contrast, purchases of foreign assets by Chinese firms and households actually slowed in 2015. As long as this remains the case, the ability of the People’s Bank to withstand pressure on the currency should not be in doubt.
