National income data released this week showed that New Zealand households are still saving at a high rate. However, with real income growth slowing and housing wealth continuing to fall, they are unlikely to loosen their purse strings meaningfully. We therefore expect the recovery to remain gradual and spare capacity to persist. With firms’ pricing behaviour also softening, we think the RBNZ will tighten by much less than markets expect.
