Recent news added to our general sense of pessimism about most African economies in 2020. While the region has yet to report any cases of the new coronavirus, falling commodity prices are already dealing a blow to exporters of oil and other industrial commodities. Angola looks particularly vulnerable. East Africa has its own outbreak to worry about; locusts are spreading across the region. While preliminary data suggested that the economic effects will be limited – at least in Kenya – the situation is developing rapidly.
