Data overplay extent of recovery, speed bumps lie ahead

The UK’s economic recovery from the coronavirus crisis is not as advanced as the latest retail sales and activity PMIs suggest. Indeed, our CE Covid Recovery Tracker shows that the overall economy is still well below its pre-crisis level and is lagging behind the recovery in the euro-zone. What’s more, the scheduled expiry of the government’s support measures over the next 18 months creates 17 separate speed bumps that need to be negotiated.
