Promotion of domestic travel could backfire

With cases continuing to surge in Tokyo and now rising fast in Osaka, now might seem like a strange time to promote domestic tourism. However, the government’s “Go To” travel campaign is due to begin on Wednesday and it will subsidise half of domestic holiday costs. It could provide a welcome economic boost to the tourism sector which has been hit exceptionally hard by efforts to contain the virus, but many fear it might come at the cost of spreading localised outbreaks across the country.
