Economy fragile even before disaster struck

Recent economic data releases have of course been overtaken by the tragedy of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on 11

th March. This edition of our  monthly chart book has therefore turned out to be a snapshot of the situation before the disaster struck. The overall impression is of an economy in recovery but still fragile. This reinforces our concern that the near-term adverse impact of the disaster could be much larger than generally anticipated.
