Existing home sales fell to their lowest level since October 2010 in September as the increase in mortgage rates to a fresh 23-year high caused buyers and sellers to withdraw from the market. A decline in mortgage applications for home purchase in September suggests sales volumes could fall a little further yet and will remain exceptionally weak for the remainder of the year.
