Three points on the equity market sell-off

The sharp falls in US equities over the past couple of days have drawn comparisons both to the much larger, pandemic-induced stock market rout earlier this year, and – because tech stocks suffered some of the largest drops after rising rapidly over recent months – to the dotcom bubble bursting twenty years ago. In our view, though, neither analogy quite hits the mark.
