Chinese trade data out this week showed that the surge in exports to Africa continued, which most countries in the region seem to be welcoming. And taken together with efforts to reduce the costs of servicing debts owed to Beijing, it looks like China's engagement with the region is deepening at the expense of Washington's. Elsewhere, South Africa’s Democratic Alliance proposed a bill to axe the ANC’s affirmative action procurement legislation, which is likely to harden tensions within government and make policy delivery harder. Finally, Côte d’Ivoire will hold presidential elections this weekend with President Outtara on course to secure a fourth term.
