GM strike will deepen the manufacturing downturn

The strike at General Motors, together with continued problems at Boeing, means that the incoming manufacturing data over the next month or two will go from bad to terrible. That is another reason to expect economic growth to slow further in the fourth quarter but, with those disruptions likely to be reversed quickly, it is also a reason to be sceptical of claims the economy is on the brink of a recession.
