The tension inherent in the Milei administration’s goals of using a strong exchange rate to lower inflation while trying to improve Argentina’s external balance sheet is becoming increasingly apparent. We think the peso will need to weaken a lot further than it has over the past month to restore Argentina’s competitiveness and rebuild FX reserves. But a major currency move seems unlikely before the mid-term elections in October.
