India’s trade deficit widened to its largest on record in October, fuelling fresh concerns about the rupee which is hovering near all-time lows against the US dollar. But the surge in gold imports is unlikely to last, and we expect the deficit to narrow in the coming months. That should help ensure that any further rupee depreciation is modest.
