Rising bond yields are tightening financial conditions which, if sustained, will weigh on economic activity. This has given rise to suggestions that tighter conditions are doing central banks’ job for them. However, France and Italy aside, tighter financial conditions mostly reflect expectations for higher policy interest rates. So, if central banks do not deliver those hikes, much of the tightening might be unwound.
