Mixed messages from Poloz

Most central bank governors would only tell us that the door is open for an interest rate cut – as Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz did on Wednesday – if they wanted to signal that a cut was on the way. But with Poloz also saying he would need to see a meaningful shortfall from the inflation target to justify a cut, we continue to think the Bank will keep policy on hold in 2020.
