Glittering TSX unlikely to boost consumption by much

There does not appear to have been any meaningful wealth effects on consumption from the skyrocketing TSX, partly because households have faced offsetting falls in house prices. We expect the TSX to struggle over the rest of 2026 as the earlier commodity-price related gains go into reverse, but households’ asset values should be protected by their large US equity holdings, which we expect to keep rising in value.
