Asia Drop-In: How much of a threat are surging bond yields to Asia’s economies?

In light of the Bank of Japan’s policy announcement this today, our Asia team hosted an online briefing all about the impact of rising bond yields on Asia’s economies and markets.

Marcel Thieliant, our Japan research lead, answered questions on the BOJ but we also be discussed the broader macro and markets context of today’s decision.

The team also highlighted inflation and debt risks from the recent sell-off in global bond markets and discussing the scope and scale of potential intervention by the region’s policymakers.

During this 20-minute session, our economists answered client questions as they addressed other key issues in Asian macro and markets, including:

  • The potential spillovers for Asia from war in the Middle East;
  • What weaker growth and stubbornly high inflation mean for the policy outlook;
  • Early thoughts on upcoming elections in India, Indonesia, Taiwan and Pakistan.
