The Japanese economy appears to be on track for a decent recovery. The key measures of business and consumer sentiment are rebounding and the April releases brought the first real evidence that this is being reflected in the activity data. However, we remain concerned that any bounce in the coming months might prove to be as good as it gets, as the global economic recovery disappoints and as deflationary pressures at home continue to build. The fragility of consumer spending is a particular worry.
